How much should a beginner practise each week?

Five minutes a day beats an hour on Saturday. How to set a practice routine that a beginner can keep.

The violin front view

Five minutes a day beats an hour on Saturday. That is the short answer. Regular, short practice helps a beginner remember what they learned and build steady habits. A long session once a week often means relearning the same things every time.

A starting point

These are starting points, not rules. Your tutor will adjust them to the learner and the instrument.

  • Young children: about 10 to 15 minutes, most days.
  • Older children and teenagers: about 20 to 30 minutes, most days.
  • Adults: whatever fits your week. Fifteen focused minutes is worth more than an hour of playing through mistakes.

Aim for five or six days a week. A rest day is fine.

What a good practice session looks like

A short session works best with a simple shape:

  1. Warm up (2 to 3 minutes). A scale, a few long notes, or a simple exercise your tutor set.
  2. The tricky bit (most of the time). Pick the one or two bars that went wrong last time. Play them slowly, then a little faster.
  3. Something you enjoy (2 to 3 minutes). Finish with a piece you like playing. It is a reason to come back tomorrow.

Make it easy to start

  • Same time, same place. Practice after breakfast, or before dinner, becomes a habit faster.
  • Leave the instrument out. If it is ready to play, it gets played.
  • Use a timer. For children, a timer turns practice into a clear, short task.
  • Keep a note. Write down what you practised. Your tutor can see what is working.

When practice feels hard

Every learner has weeks when practice slips. Start again with five minutes. Small steps keep the habit alive, and confidence comes back quickly.

How we help

At Piedbells, your tutor sets a short daily practice after every lesson, with materials shared in Google Classroom. Every student also gets a progress report each month, so you can see what has improved.
